It is with sadness that we note the passing away of Dr Jocelyne McIver earlier this week. Jocelyne was the founder of the Wits Language School which opened its doors for the first time in 1997. She has struggled for many years against cancer. Her brave and unwavering determination to win the battle with her illness reflects the type of person she was. Wits Language School expresses our sincere condolences to her family.

Jocelyne was passionate about French and teaching people to communicate effectively in this language. It was her vision to create a school offering short language courses to the general public. It was her drive that enabled the school to grow from its humble beginnings to the world class facility it is today, offering courses to students from all over the world.

The school initially only offered courses in French and Zulu. This small division later became the highly successful African, Asian and European language department. In 2003 the school expanded into offering more languages, as well as English courses. Between 2007 and 2009 the Language Teacher Education and the Translating and Interpreting departments were opened. From an intake of a handful of students in its first year, the Wits Language School expects over 3200 students in 2012! From 2 staff in 1997 (including Jocelyn), the school now has a staff complement of over 115 professionals. From a couple of offices on the 2nd floor of Senate House, we now have our own building with state of the art facilities.

Dr Jocelyne McIver was instrumental in laying the foundation for the success of the Wits Language School. She will always be remembered for her good heart, her passion for language and her courageous spirit.
