About Spanish

Flag of SpainLearn to Speak Spanish

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world. Did you know if you speak Spanish you can communicate with nearly 500 million people in the world?  In an age of increased global communication and travel it's no surprise that Spanish is one of the most popular additional or “foreign” languages being studied.

More Reasons to Learn Spanish

More and more South Africans are choosing to learn Spanish for travel, social and business reasons. Many students attend Wits Language School after travelling abroad to Spanish speaking countries (mostly in South America). On their return to South Africa they want to keep up their Spanish Language skills and at Wits Language school we offer courses to do just that.  Having a basic knowledge of Spanish is also a great help when travelling abroad.

How you will Learn Spanish at Wits Language School

Spanish pronunciation varies from country to country and even within Spain itself. At Wits Language School we teach standard Spanish pronunciation. This is understood everywhere, including South America. Learning standard Spanish pronunciation also gives you a base from which to learn more localised versions of Spanish.

We assist students who have some knowledge of the language by arranging a Pre-Course assessment and placing students in the level best suited to their language ability.  Register Online for a course with the African, Asian and European language department. We will then contact you to arrange a Pre-Course Language Assessment.

Spanish Language Courses at Wits Language School

Wits Language School offers Spanish courses at three levels of tuition:

  • Level 1 (Beginner);
  • Level 2 (Elementary) and
  • Level 3 (Pre-Intermediate).

Level 4 (Intermediate) is available on request.

Each Level lasts around six months, with ninety-six hours of tuition*. To make it more convenient for you we have split the levels into modules of 3 months each (Module A and Module B). Modules break up the content into manageable chunks and give you more flexibility. You can work through the Modules and Levels at your own pace and based on your available time. At the end of Module A you will receive a Certificate of Attendance. At the end of Module B you will complete written and oral tests, and will be awarded a Certificate of Competence.

* Courses are run at reduced contact hours when a public class cannot go ahead. This requires all the students’ agreement and an understanding that you need to supplement your learning through additional self-study and independent work in the Wits Language School lab. Semi-private classes are only run when public classes of 8 or more students can’t be offered.

You can read more about our language course levels and outcomes. If there is any other information you require, don't hesitate to contact us and we will do our best to assist you.
