Medical English

English as a Foreign Language – Medical English

We offer two specialist courses in Medical English. These courses are for medical professionals who need to communicate in English with patients, family members and other medical colleagues. The courses focus on using English to communicate with the patient and other professionals. For example: taking a patient’s history, recording a diagnosis, or recording a treatment plan.

  1. Medical English 1 – a foundation course, focusing on general English. This is a 30-hour course which runs for six hours a day over five days.
  2. Medical English 2 – focuses specifically on medical language and terminology, and is a 40-hour course which runs over eight days.

Both courses require an intermediate level of English. The courses are offered according to demand. Contact us to find out more information on Medical English Courses. You can also look at our section on how to Register for a Wits Language School Course.
English for Academic Purposes

English as a Foreign Language – English for Academic Purposes

This is an IELTS preparation course. The IELTS exam is a Cambridge-based exam run through the British Council. It is a used by many universities (such as Cambridge, Oxford and Wits) as an entrance criterion for those who do not speak English as their first language. A minimum IELTS test score is also required by certain countries if you wish to immigrate.

We offer a 60-hour part-time course in which we prepare the students for the IELTS exam. This course will also help students prepare for university studies in English.

Students must be at an advanced level in English to qualify for this course. It is offered three or four times per year, according to demand.
