The Commemoration of June 16th - Soweto uprising
We at Wits Language School cannot emphasise enough the importance of this day for South Africans. Saturday the 16th of June 2018 marked the 42nd anniversary of the 1976 SOWETO uprising. A day on which thousands of students were ready to give up their lives for education and for a better South Africa, and when children stood up to the terror of the Apartheid regime. A day when the fight for education and freedom triumphed over tyranny. The importance of this day should never be forgotten especially for those of us in an educational institution. We should reflect upon the meaning of this day and draw inspiration. On 16th June 1976 many South Africans built the foundations for a stronger nation because of their sacrifices. As the great Nelson Mandala said, a debt is owed to the students of 1976. A debt that can never be repaid. However, we can honour them by striving for excellence and ensuring that education is used to further advance our society.
Viva, South Africa, Viva!
Let the legacy live on.
