How to achieve your New Year’s resolutions
Setting realistic goals can lead to a healthier lifestyle and improved self-esteem. It is important to plan the changes you would like to make in your life. Knowing that you can make small changes in your life can give you the motivation and confidence to tackle bigger changes and goals.
The following tips will help you set realistic goals in 2016:
- Write down your goals
Write down your ideas, goals and wishes for 2016. Always carry a notebook with you in case you need to write down new ideas throughout the day / week. Make sure you can read through these ideas and goals on a regular basis. This will help you to stay focused and remind you about what you are working towards. When you write, use positive words and phrases. This will help you to stay positive throughout the course of the year. Once you have completed a task, goal or plan, make sure you tick this off your list. Students usually have a greater chance of meeting their goals and objectives when they keep track of their progress in some way. It is very rewarding to be able to tick off an accomplishment.
- Set realistic goals
Don’t make your goals too grand or too complex. They need to be measurable, attainable, and realistic. Remember to consider your finances, schedule, and other personal affairs when setting your goals, as this can influence them. It is also unreasonable to expect many big changes to happen all at the same time. You need to be patient.
- Develop an action plan
List the steps that you need to take to achieve your goal/s. Create a timeline that will help you to set deadlines and check each step of the process. Be flexible and remember that setbacks can happen. Don’t get discouraged and give up. It is also a good idea to have a calendar where you can keep track of deadlines and important dates. If you miss a deadline, you miss an opportunity.
- You are not alone
Share your experiences with your family and friends. Don’t be afraid to ask for help and to use your resources. Your family and friends are there to support you and keep you motivated. If you feel overwhelmed or unable to meet your goals on your own, consider seeking professional help.
- Reward yourself
Reaching your goals takes hard work and you should be proud of your efforts. Acknowledge your achievements. You can reward yourself with small gifts or treats which will make you feel satisfied and fulfilled with your achievements.
