African, Asian and European Languages Newsletter July 2012

WITS LANGUAGE SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JULY 2012

We receive many queries from students who want to learn another language but don't know which one to choose. We canvassed our students and here are some of the reasons why they chose to learn different languages.

This should give you some idea which of our upcoming language courses you should choose. We also introduce two of our Spanish trainers – Antonio Martinez Meraz and Maite Perez.

Struggling to choose a language course?

We receive a number of questions each day from prospective students. While most of these questions deal with practical issues that are easy to answer, such as “When does the course start?” and “What is the course fee?”, several questions are less expected and rather more challenging to answer. One of these is asked by people who want to study several languages at the same time. When told that this is not possible, firstly because the different language classes run simultaneously, and secondly because anyone trying to do so is very likely to confuse the languages they’re learning and will probably not complete either of the courses. The next request is then for advice on which language to learn. Since the motivation for choosing a particular language is usually personal, I’ve provided a number of quotes from our students on why they’re studying another language. Perhaps one of these reasons will be the one you’re looking for.

I am a sworn English/Spanish translator, having received my accreditation, in 1994, from the Supreme Court of SA, Witwatersrand, Local Division. I also hold a CELTA Certificate – through the University of Cambridge – having completed UK ESOL examinations (enabling me to teaching English to adult speakers of other languages).

My experience covers a broad range of industries, having worked for various companies tutoring Spanish on a private and contract basis. Some of the entities I have worked for include Expatriate Preparations, Iberia Airlines, the Spanish Embassy Commercial Office, the Argentine Consulate, Language Works, the British Council Cambridge Examinations and the Wits Language School.

I have provided interpreting and translating services for visiting business delegations, government officials and private individuals, as well as various local and multinational organisations, and have also done translation of legal documentation. In addition, I have done a fair share of broadcasting work, including presenting and voiceovers for corporate marketing material, through Now Media, working as a co-presenter in Spanish on a local expose for Travel Channel Latin America , Spanish television expose on Spaniards living abroad for Television Andaluza (Canal Sur), script translation and assistance on pronunciation of text with actors for 7de Laan – a local TV series by Danie Odendaal Productions.
