Postgraduate courses in Translation and Interpreting

In this course, aimed at interpreters, our aim is to improve students’ grasp of the principles and professional practice which govern the interpreting profession in basic to intermediate conference interpreting contexts. Students enhance their conference preparation techniques and terminology management, as well as improving their ability to assess the interpreting process and apply interpreting coping tactics. Participants carry out conference interpreting practice in the simultaneous mode (including simultaneous interpreting with text).

This course is cutting edge specialisation offered at Honours level (NQF 8) in French and English, aiming to refine graduates’ auditory and written language skills at an advanced level and at the same time to provide introductory training for those wishing to work in professional language contexts, including, where feasible, professional transcription skills (including Hansard), report writing in meeting and conference contexts and monolingual subtitling (captioning) and audio description for film/TV/DVD as well as live performances.

This course is offered at Honours level (NQF level 8), and aimed at conference interpreters and/or students who have passed Introduction to Conference Interpreting. We focus on the principles, norms and professional practice governing the interpreting profession in intermediate to advanced conference interpreting contexts (which may include at least two of the following: interpreting for business, conference interpreting in the South African context, interpreting for the diplomatic service, interpreting for provincial and national legislatures (Parliament) and/or conference interpreting in international contexts).

In this course, our aim is to equip graduates with the comprehensive range of practical and theoretical skills they will need to work as professional translators, and to provide students with a general overview of the principles and practice which govern the translation profession. Texts for translation reflect the typical range of texts encountered by a professional freelance translator and may include journalism, media/advertising, health/medical and general technical texts.

This course is a cutting edge specialisation offered at Honours level (NQF level 8). Localisation involves translating websites, software, online documentation, etc., into the language of a specific target audience. It is also concerned with ensuring that a product's content, style, graphics, and cultural conventions are appropriate to the country and language in which it is to be used. Participants are introduced to the theory and practice of localisation in the South African context, and carry out practical localisation tasks performed with localisation tools.
