Communicating with the world has never been easier
Wits Language School offers part-time courses in French, Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese, Zulu and South African Sign Language.  Part-time courses in an alternative language such as German, Mandarin, Arabic, Setswana or Italian, are offered according to demand. If you can provide us with your name and contact details, we will inform you as soon as the course is scheduled to start.

Through our courses, individuals and organisations are equipped with language abilities that enable effective communication with other cultures.

Lack of intercultural sensitivity can lead to mistrust and misunderstandings which ultimately leads to the inability to communicate with and understand a culture. Wits Language School recognises that learning another language is the catalyst for intercultural understanding.

Our languages include:

  • African - IsiZulu, SeSotho*, Afrikaans* and South African Sign Language
  • Asian and Middle Eastern– Arabic*, Mandarin* and Japanese*
  • European - German*, French, Portuguese, Greek*, Italian* and Spanish.

Note: *Courses are offered on private tuition only or subject to demand.

The need for global citizens to be competent in other languages is increasingly becoming a prerequisite both for organisations and for those who enjoy travel. A person competent in other languages can bridge the gap between cultures and successfully engage in effective communication and negotiation.

Why learn another language

There are many advantages to learning another language.

Career:  Knowledge of another language is a marketable skill that opens up employment opportunities. Not only will you have the advantage over colleagues by being able to communicate with foreign and local clients, you become more employable should you wish to pursue your career both locally and overseas.

Travel: Travelling becomes more enjoyable when you know the language of the country you are visiting. You have the comfort of being able to successfully navigate all sorts of situations, like ordering meals in a restaurant, asking and understanding directions, finding accommodation and generally conversing with the natives. In most countries, people will appreciate attempts to use their language.

Personal development: People learn other languages for different personal reasons.  If you are interested in foreign literature, music and film, for example, being able to access them in their original form leads to enhanced appreciation.

When meeting a foreign exchange student or getting to know the locals while travelling, working or studying abroad enables you to forge relationships both locally and globally. This may lead to lifelong connections and friends.

Whatever your reason for choosing to learn another language, the Wits Language School will provide you with the skills to reach your language goals.
