Zulu is the most widely spoken language in South African and is also the most widely spoken African language in South Africa. For this reason Zulu is the language that most English, Afrikaans and foreign speakers choose to learn when learning an African language. Approximately 10 million South Africans speak Zulu as a first language and many more speak Zulu as a second language.
Students learn Zulu at Wits Language School to improve their communication with fellow South Africans. Many express their desire for greater cultural awareness and integration within the social fabric of South Africa; students see themselves as being actively involved in the social renewal of our country. We couldn’t agree more – learning Zulu offers all of this as well as great personal satisfaction through the challenge of learning a new language. Speaking Zulu, even at a beginner level, can lead to increased social and even business opportunities.
Our Zulu courses focus on teaching you how to communicate in real-life situations. We cover the cultural aspects of this language to help you feel at ease when speaking to Zulu speakers. Many varieties of Zulu are spoken throughout South Africa (with variations between provinces). At Wits Language School we teach standard Zulu. This will give a strong basis from which to learn additional, localised vocabulary.
Wits Language School in Johannesburg, Gauteng offers Zulu courses at three levels of tuition:
Level 4 (Intermediate) is available on request.
Each Level lasts around six months, with ninety-six hours of tuition*. To make it more convenient for you we have split the levels into modules of 3 months each (Module A and Module B). Modules break up the content into manageable chunks and give you more flexibility. You can work through the Modules and Levels at your own pace and based on your available time. At the end of Module A you will receive a Certificate of Attendance. At the end of Module B you will complete written and oral tests, and will be awarded a Certificate of Competence.
* Courses are run at reduced contact hours when a public class cannot go ahead. This requires all the students’ agreement and an understanding that you need to supplement your learning through additional self-study and independent work in the Wits Language School lab. Semi-private classes are only run when public classes of 8 or more students can’t be offered.
