Language Courses

African, Asian and European Languages – Language Courses

Our languages are in 3 broad groups:

  1. European Languages – we offer courses in Italian, French, German, Greek, Spanish and Portuguese.
  2. Asian and Middle-Eastern Languages – we offer courses in Arabic, Mandarin Chinese and Japanese.
  3. South African Languages – we offer courses in Afrikaans, IsiZulu and Sesotho. You can also learn South African Sign Language, which we do in collaboration with the Wits Centre for Deaf Studies.
Course Structure

African, Asian and European Languages  – Course Structure

All of the courses offered in the African, Asian and European Language section are at three levels of tuition:

  1. Level 1 (Beginner);
  2. Level 2 (Elementary) and
  3. Level 3 (Pre-Intermediate).

Each Level lasts around six months, with ninety-six hours of tuition*. To make it more convenient for you we have split the levels into modules of 3 months each (Module A and Module B). Modules break up the content into manageable chunks and give you more flexibility. You can work through the Modules and Levels at your own pace and based on your available time. At the end of Module A you will receive a Certificate of Attendance. At the end of Module B you will complete written and oral tests, and will be awarded a Certificate of Competence.

* Courses are run at reduced contact hours when a public class cannot go ahead. This requires all the students’ agreement and an understanding that you need to supplement your learning through additional self-study and independent work in the Wits Language School lab. Semi-private classes are only run when public classes of 8 or more students can’t be offered.

Content and Outcomes

African, Asian and European Languages  - Course Content and Outcomes

LEVEL ONE - Entry Level or Beginner Course

On completion, you will be able to interact (speak and listen) at a basic level on areas of immediate need using rehearsed phrases and simple vocabulary. You will use key phrases and structures in response to typical scenarios and rely heavily on the native speaker for assistance. You will also listen, read and write at a basic level and have learnt the grammar necessary for this level of communication. If you learn Arabic, Mandarin or Japanese you will be expected to write only selected characters, but you will read and transcribe selected texts.
