Course Details

Length - Notional study time is 100 hours, consisting of:
- 40 hours - contact time
- 40 hours - self-study time
- 20 hours - assessment time

Structure - Full-time Course
Duration: 2 weeks
Days: Monday – Friday
Times: 08h00 – 16h00
   
Structure - Part-time Course
Duration: 4 weeks
Days: 3 evenings a week and Saturday mornings
Times: Weekdays: 17h30 – 21h00
Saturdays: 08h30 – 13h00


Admission Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements in order to be accepted onto the course:

  •  Minimum of 18 years of age
  • First language proficiency in English
  • Minimum of a National Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
  • A professional teaching certificate (e.g. TESOL/TEFL/CELTA or DELTA)
  • A university degree is highly recommended

 


Teaching English to Young Learners (TEYL)

Certificate of Competence in Teaching English to Young Learners - NQF Level 5

Aims of the TEYL Course

To develop the knowledge and skills needed to teach English to young learners ranging in age from 3 to 15 years.

Outcomes of the TEYL Course

On completion of the course, candidates will:

  • Be familiar with the characteristics and needs of young learners
  • Have an awareness of the context and process of language learning by young learners
  • Have developed an awareness of language and skills and be able to apply these in their professional practice
  • Understand and be able to apply the principles and practice of effective teaching of language to young learners
  • Possess basic skills, techniques and strategies required to effectively teach language to young learners
  • Be able to assess and evaluate young learners language
  • Be familiar with appropriate resources and materials for use with young language learners
  • Be familiar with professional development opportunities

    • Defining a young learner

    • Young Learner Development (psychological, intellectual, social, physical)
  3. Teaching strategies
    • Using storytelling

    • Using drama, dialogue and poetry
    • Using songs, music, chants and rhymes
    • Using dance and movement
    • Using games and activities
  4. Lesson planning
  5. Language area
    • Grammar
    • Phonology
    • Reading
    • Writing
    • Speaking
    • Listening
  6. Resources and materials for teaching language to Young Learners
  7. Classroom management
    • Classroom safety

  8. Testing, evaluating and assessing Young Learners
  9. Professional Development for teachers of Young Learners

TEYL Course Assessment

Students must achieve a minimum of 50% in each of the following areas:

  • Written assignments
  • Supervised teaching practice
  • Portfolio

A certificate of attendance will be issued if the minimum mark is not attained.
