Course Details

Length - Notional study time is 160 hours, consisting of:
- 100 hours - contact time
- 40 hours - self-study time
- 20 hours - assessment time

Structure - Full-time Course
Duration: 4 weeks
Days: Monday – Friday
Times: 08h00 – 16h00
 
Structure - Part-time Course
Duration: 12 weeks
Days: 2 evenings a week and Saturday mornings
1st & 3rd courses of the year: Mon, Wed, Sat
2nd & 4th courses of the year: Tue, Thu, Sat
Times: Weekdays: 17h30 – 21h00
Saturdays: 08h30 - 13h00


Admission Criteria
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • First language proficiency in English
  • Minimum of a National Senior Certificate (Grade 12)
  • A degree is highly recommended

Aims of the TESOL Course

The TESOL course is for individuals who want to teach others how to speak English. This course is internationally recognised and will allow you to teach whiling travelling the world. Wits Language School has exclusive rights to offer this fully accredited INTESOL Certificate in TESOL (teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages).

Outcomes of the TESOL Course

On completion of the course, candidates will:

  • Develop an understanding of vocabulary in context
  • Have developed an awareness of various teaching methodologies of TESOL
  • Develop teaching style to become more ‘communicative’
  • Improve understanding of and be able to apply teaching skills
  • Improve understanding of meta language related to TESOL
  • Identify the form, functions and learner problems related to teaching tenses and aspects in English
  • Identify the ‘contexts’ that English tenses, aspects and grammar are used in
  • Use phonology to identify and assist in correcting learner pronunciation problems

TESOL Course Assessment

Students must achieve a minimum of 50% in each of the following areas:

  • Written assignments
  • Supervised teaching practice

A certificate of attendance will be issued if the minimum mark is not attained.
