Your translation and interpreting trainers

THANDIWE NXUMALO - Thandiwe is the acting head of the Translation and Interpreting unit at Wits Language School.Thandiwe derives her research interest in contemporary African language discourse and communication through different platforms – interpreting, translating and teaching. She obtained her B.A. Ed and B.Ed in 1987 and 1988 respectively at the University of Witwatersrand, majoring in Drama and Film and Education. In 1990 she obtained an MA in translation in English and Zulu. She has worked as a lecturer in the Department of African Languages and Literatures at Wits from 1993 – 1999 and has written and published books in second language teaching. Thandiwe has worked extensively as a freelance conference interpreter and translator. Before joining Wits Language School, she worked as a social media and children’s television series specialist. She is completing her Masters in Public Health with a focus on social behaviour change communication.


DR OLIVIER FLÉCHAIS – Dr Fléchais is  a member of AIIC (International Association of Conference Interpreters) and SATI (South African Translators’ Institute). He holds a PhD in Language Didactics & Sociolinguistics and is an experienced lecturer. Interpretation has been part of his professional life since 1987, first as a business and liaison interpreter and later, from 1994, as a conference interpreter working for international organisations such as the United Nations and the African Union. His career has enabled him to link language skills acquisition with interpretation skills acquisition. In this context and from his long experience of the African interpretation market, Dr Fléchais has undertaken to convene suitable high-level interpretation instructors to teach Africa-based practising interpreters or those who would like to become interpreters in Africa in the near future. He has joined forces with Wits Language School and Dr Kim Wallmach as a consultant and course convenor to create a dynamic, adaptable interpretation programme at the University of the Witwatersrand which can benefit the most talented students and the most talented instructors. EUGENE MATHEY - Eugene has a BA Honours in Applied Linguistics from North-West University and more than five years’ professional educational interpreting experience as well as freelance conference interpreting experience. He is accredited for English-Afrikaans conference interpreting with the South African Translators’ Institute (SATI). He lectures in interpreting and translation as well as acting as course administrator for the Diploma in Legal Interpreting.
