Improve your English with the English for Professional and Social Purposes course (Natural English)

The Professional and Social English course runs in conjunction with the six levels offered in the English as a Foreign Language course, a full-time course run over seven weeks.  It is for anyone who has completed the intermediate to advanced EFL courses (Level 4, Level 5 or Level 6) and would like to continue with English, but does not want a strong academic focus.

Please note: this course is not to be confused with the English for Professional Development course - a part-time course for people who want to improve their English so that they can advance their careers.

This course focuses on fluency i.e. using Natural English to communicate in different social contexts as well as in the working environment. This Natural English course is offered at both higher and lower level. The lower level course focuses on communication skills such us keeping up a conversation on a range of everyday topics, describing personal experiences and complaining about the service in a hotel or restaurant. In the higher level course you will learn how to engage in small talk, deal with differences of opinion, give presentations on innovative ideas and use appropriate idiomatic language.

Students will receive a certificate of competence in English for Professional and Social Purposes on successful completion of the course.

English for Professional & Social Purposes - Course details

By the end of the course, the learner should be able to demonstrate ability to:

  1. Keep up a conversation on a fairly wide range of topics, such as personal and professional experiences, as well as events currently in the news
  2. Take and pass on messages in a working environment that are likely to require attention during a normal working day
  3. Give a clear presentation on a familiar topic, and answer predictable or factual questions
  4. Understand most correspondence, reports and factual product literature he/she is likely to come across in a work context
  5. Deal with all routine requests for goods or services in a work context
  6. Understand detailed information, such as terms and abbreviations in accommodation advertisements
  7. Make correspondence with a variety of purposes
  8. Interact and reach agreements in a variety of contexts
