Language Qualifications
  • First language usage (or near-mother tongue fluency).
  • Experience in teaching the language as a foreign language to adult learners – preferably two years’ experience.
  • Candidates who have taught for less than the required two years or who have not necessarily taught their language to adult learners may still contact the Wits Language School.
  • Tertiary degree in language or education. If possible specialisation in subjects such as: methodology and practice of teaching a foreign language.
  • Degrees in related fields (applied linguistics, literature and language studies) will be considered
  • Diploma in teaching a foreign language is an added benefit.
Other Requirements
  • South African citizenship or valid South African ID (permanent resident) or valid work permit (e.g. specialised skills visa) or study permit;
  • Availability to work in the evenings and Saturday mornings;
  • Own transport.

Language Teacher Trainer (Full-time)

Applications are invited for the position of Language Teacher Trainer (Full-time). The Trainer will be responsible for course development, training and assessment on pre-service and in-service language teacher education courses in the Language Teacher Education department at Wits Language School. This is a two-year grant-funded position, contract renewable depending on funding.

Minimum requirements:

  • A university degree, preferably in the field of language or education;
  • ;A minimum of 3 years experience in teaching English as a foreign language (EFL) or second language (ESL), preferably both locally and internationally;
  • Experience in teaching Business English, English to Young Learners or English for Academic Purposes will be an advantage;
  • Appropriate pre-service and in-service language teacher training experience, preferably both locally and internationally;
  • Experience in course administration;
  • Experience in course and material development;
  • ;Excellent presentation and interpersonal skills;
  • Organised and self-motivated;
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team;
  • Ability to travel and work in the evenings and on Saturdays;
  • A valid driver’s licence;
  • A valid South African work permit.

Duties:

  • Train pre-service and in-service teachers enrolled on language teacher education courses;
  • Observe and assess student teachers’ teaching practice;
  • Assist with course and material development;
  • Assist with administration.

Remuneration: Will depend on qualifications and relevant experience

The successful candidate should be able to take up the post from 1 February 2012.
